Freedom and unity memorial

Berlin

The Freedom and Unity Memorial is being built in the center of Berlin, opposite the west portal of the palace. It will be constructed on the preserved pedestal of the equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

After the Wilhelmine national monument remained undamaged during the Second World War, it was demolished by the GDR regime in 1949. The supporting structure and detailed solutions of the new monument are designed with respect for the heritage-protected underground chambers and vaults. The movable shell and its access points are placed on the original base. The shell is constructed using a weight-optimized spatial supporting structure made of steel components, as commonly seen in bridge construction. A combined spring and damping system ensures smooth movement at all times. The substructure consists of a robust pile head slab, with its surface adapted to the shape of the shell. All historical chambers are carefully sealed with new constructions. The geometry of the construction is determined by both the original building and the shape of the shell, making it extremely complex. Thanks to 3D modeling, this was accomplished flawlessly.
